Description |
English: In 1906-1907, residents of Kirkland, Washington were deeply divided over whether or not to allow the sale of liquor inside city limits. According to a long-time Kirkland resident, Jack Ferry sold liquor illegally at his grocery store despite the fact that the city was "dry." Mayor A.B. Newell enforced the prohibition law, and he and his supporters ran Ferry out of town. Feelings ran so high that someone hung Ferry in effigy. This 1907 photo, taken in Kirkland, shows the figure representing bootlegger Jack Ferry hanging in front of an ice storage shed labeled "City Hall." Several other dummies, identities unknown, stand in a cage labeled "Jail." According to the story, the cage once held monkeys at Madison Park. Original title: Kirkland 1907
