English: Green-Wood Cemetery was founded in 1838 on the highest site in the City of Brooklyn to serve as a burial place for New Yorkers at a time when cemeteries in New York City (Manhattan) were nearing their capacity. It was designed by David Bates Douglas and was modeled after Pere Lachaise in Paris and Mount Auburn in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It became a fashionable burial place after the body of Governor DeWitt Clinton was transferred there from Abany and a bronze memorial for him designed by sculptor Henry Kirke Brown was raised.

The 478 acre cemetery's Gothic Revival entrance (1861) was designed by Richard M. Upjohn of Richard Upjohn and Sons and is a New York City landmark. Some 600,000 people are buried in Green-Wood, including [Hezekiah Beers Pierrepont, Henry Ward Beecher, Nathaniel Currier and James Ives, Peter Cooper, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Samuel F. B. Morse, William "Boss" Tweed, Horace Greeley, James Gordon Bennett, Frank Morgan, Lola Montez, Fred Ebb, Leonard Bernstein, and more than 3,000 Civil War veterans. The cemetery was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2006. (Sources: Encyclopedia of New York City (2nd ed.), Guide to NYC Landmarks (4th ed.}, and AIA Guide to NYC (5th ed.)
